I'm starting to think that oatmeal stouts might be impossible to screw up. I don't know if I've ever had a bad one, most of them have been pretty darn good and some of them have been just plain great. Firestone Walker's Velvet Merlin is one of the pretty good ones, and I enjoyed it. It pours jet black but thin, and the head fades quickly. The aroma is coffee atop rich, smooth malt. Maybe a little hops, too. The flavor is just the same, and that's a good thing. There's also a little chocolate and a little dark bread, before a crisp finish. This is not a heavy stout at all, but a satisfying one.
